It’s quite possible that on occasion you’ll receive an AutoCAD drawing file that’s corrupted. It might have some sort of glitch in its data. This can happen, for instance, when the drawing was created in a non-AutoCAD software environment. Several software packages available in the market claim to be compatible with AutoCAD, when in reality they have only limited capability to export a good DWG file. Using AutoCAD tools in non-standard ways, intentionally or unintentionally, such as making a zero length line or generating a text object that has no text in it can also lead to corruption in the files. If you refrain from removing the corrupt elements, the drawing might cause issues or worse lead to a blue screen crash. Luckily, cleaning a corrupted file is generally easy and it’s vital that you check regularly to ensure your dwg format file is clean and free of glitches.

    Issues of Corrupted Files

    • File doesn’t open, hangs or crashes AutoCAD
    • The performance slows down when one edits and manipulates the file
    • When opening or working in the file, an error message crops up
    • Some commands don’t work or have a substantial delay
    • The file size increases without any knowledge
    • Problems related to Display/Regen surface
    • Drawing elements are missing

    Causes for Corrupted Files

    • Third party applications running inside AutoCAD is one of the main causes for corrupted files
    • DWG files created or saved by non-Autodesk or non-RealDWG products
    • Old drawings used repeatedly over the course of years
    • Defective or failing RAM
    • Storage media degradation
    • Issues related to operating system and surging of power

    Repair and Recovery

If a drawing file gets damaged, some or all of the data can be recovered by using commands to determine and correct errors. These commands can be learnt in depth by anyone who attends an AutoCAD course. When an error occurs, diagnostic information is recorded in the acad.err file or acadlt.err file for AutoCAD LT, which you can use to report a problem. If the corrupted data gets detected then a drawing file is marked as damaged, or even if you request that the drawing be saved after a program failure. If the damage is minor, at times you can repair the drawing just by opening it. You will receive a recovery notification that is displayed whilst opening the drawing file that is damaged and requires recovery. Here you can

    • Recover – performs an audit on, and attempts to open, any drawing file
    • Recover all – similar to recover, this additionally operates on all nested xrefs. The results are displayed in the Drawing Recovery Log window
    • Audit – locates and corrects errors in the current drawing
    • RecoverAuto – controls the display of recovery notifications prior to or after opening a damaged drawing file

A professional having undergone online Revit training or CAD training has the ability and responsibility not to leave a corruption problem uncorrected, as it can lead into wasted man hours and lost productivity, both for the person currently using the file and for those who work with the drawing file further down the line.

Grey Edge’s leading Revit and CAD training centre constantly strives to provide the best AutoCAD courses in Mumbai to the aspirant. Backed by experienced and well trained faculty and the best infrastructure, including online and classroom tutorials, we offer the best architectural internships in India.

Don’t buy this machine for these software applications. You’re better off with a high-end PC laptop or a Macbook Pro with Bootcamp.

It is technically possible to run these applications (e.g. via Bootcamp, through Parallels or Fusion or Virtualbox), but this is not their intended use.

I’m using a Macbook Pro (mid 2012) with 16 Gb RAM and a Geforce GT 650M card (not the best). I’m using it mainly for Research, but also ArchiCAD and SketchUp; alongside Office, writing, screen capturing (all native Mac versions).

It runs Revit 2015 through Parallels but it can be sluggish. For serious work, I restart in Bootcamp (running Windows 8.1 Pro natively). Be sure to add a regular mouse, as my Magic mouse is not fully usable in Bootcamp (no middle-mouse drag – which does work in Parallels using Magicprefs).

script is a macro, a list of commands that you can run all at once, and as many times as necessary, allowing you to automate tasks that would take a long time if you did them manually. Scripts can be very powerful and you can run them on objects in one drawing, or on many drawings. Scripts have been around for many years and many people have a library of many scripts that they use.

See my tip, Record Actions with the Actir,on Recorde for a way to record your actions in AutoCAD 2009 and later.

Here are 3 important points that you need to know about scripts:

    1. Scripts are text-only (ASCII) files. You usually create them in Notepad.
    2. They have an SCR filename extension, so be sure to save them that way.
    3. Scripts use command-line syntax only. They can’t access dialog boxes, toolbar buttons, etc.

Follow these steps to create a script file:

    1. Set the FILEDIA system variable to 0, to stop dialog boxes that access files from opening.
    2. Run through the steps that you want to automate, using the command line only. Write down (or type in Notepad) the steps. You can copy your command line entry directly to Notepad. Press F2 to open the AutoCAD Text Window for that purpose.
    3. Press Enter at the end of each command or use a blank space, which is the equivalent of pressing Enter. The script reads every space, so you need to get it exactly right! The script is easier to read if you put each command on its own line.
    4. Enclose layer names or files names (and file paths) that contain spaces in quotation marks.
    5. Insert comments periodically for explanation. To insert a comment, precede the text with a semicolon.
    6. Save the file with an SCR filename extension, by typing .scr after the file name.
    7. Set FILEDIA back to 1.

To run and test the script file from within a drawing, use the SCRIPT command. A dialog box opens, where you can choose your script file. Click Open and the script runs.

Let’s say that you want to run a script file on more than one drawing. You can use the OPEN, CLOSE, and QSAVE commands to opendrawings, run some commands, save the drawings, and then close them. You can still start the script from within the 1st drawing, but you can also start a script file as you open AutoCAD.

To do so, you change the expression that Windows uses to openAutoCAD. The best way to do this is to use the shortcut on your Desktop. Follow these steps:

      1. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
      2. Click the Shortcut tab.
      3. At the end of the existing expression (which reads something like C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2009\acad.exe) add a space and then the following:

    /b script_name

    1. Click OK.
    2. Double-click the shortcut to open AutoCAD and run the script.

Basic tutorial is in help in AutoCad. Both ways – Autocad and Inventor are totaly different. In Autocad we talk about 2D drawing – substitution of draw board, but with Inventor we discuss about 3D modeling from complete parts ( shafts, bearings, etc…) 3D in Autocad is according my oppinion little bit user unfriendly. My reccomendation is, to start with Autocad with simple drawings. Take paper drawing and try to draw it in Autocad. It was my way.

AutoCADs Drawing format DWG has changed many times over the years. The most current changes have taken place every three releases. So with this in mind here is a small chart that shows some of these

Versions that have the same DWG format
    – 2014,2013 = 2013 version
    – 2012,2011,2010 = 2010 Version
    – 2009,2008,2007 = 2007 Version

When these are referred to they are known by the first version number. So the 2014 and 2013 Version would be known as the 2013 version of the DWG. We can set AutoCAD so it always saves in an earlier version.

How to set AutoCAD save version
1.) Right click on the command line and select Options (or Launch Options as desired)
2.) Go to the Open and Save tab
3.) In the top left you will see a drop down under the Saveas Section This is the version it is currently saving as.
4.) select the version you want AutoCAD to save to and select OK
Now your AutoCAD is set to save to the version you selected in the Options Dialog Box

    Note:
    – Objects that were created in newer versions and were not available in the version you are saving to will be lost in most cases
    – Vertical programs such as Civil 3D , Architecture, etc have their own custom Objects and in most cases are not backwards compatable and the

vertical Options will be disabled ( You will not be able to use the commands for that program in the earlier version)
