Hey John,
Yes that graphics card should be fine for AutoCAD.
The rest of the spec is great. I just don’t have experience with that graphics card but I know it’s powerful.
You asked whether it would run ‘smoothly’ with your setup, just bear in mind that it will depend on the complexity of your drawings. You can quite easily slow-down any system with suitable drawing complexity.
I’d love to know how you get on!

I would look for jewellery specific communities, rather than CAD-specific file sharing communities. If the community is focused on jewellery design then there will likely be a number of users who want to pay for great designs.
I’ve come across ‘Jewelry This‘ but I can’t speak to the quality of the community.
Are your designs in 3D or 2D? What software did you use to design them?

Hey lolipop! What kind of CAD files are you trying to sell? I assume they’re designed by you?

Yes, all of CAD software will move to the cloud, it’s just a matter of time.
If there’s a benefit – for either the developers or the users – to move the software to being cloud-based then it will happen.
Of course, there’s already a lot of CAD services which are predominantly cloud-based. The one that makes the most sense to me currently is those which are sharing files and enabling collaborative comments such as GrabCAD’s Workbench.
The services which are still currently best suited for running natively on PCs are those which involve complex CAD design and modelling. This requires a lot of computing power. It’s not possible to do this cost-efficiently on a server currently. But Moore’s Law tells us it’s just a matter of time!

The answer depends on whether you’re starting with the original plans in another format e.g. PDFs, images or paper plans.
If part of your process is to convert the designs to a CAD format then I would suggest Scan2CAD.
Full disclosure: I work at Scan2CAD so I’m biased 🙂
If you are designing the plans in CAD from scratch then there’s no need for conversion software.
So I would recommend AutoCAD.
You may be looking at other applications because AutoCAD doesn’t ship with firesafety templates but as the AutoCAD community is thriving, there are a lot of resources out there.
Here’s some examples:
- Free library of fire safety symbols http://www.firesafe.org.uk/graphical-symbols-and-abbreviations-for-fire-protection-drawings/
- Building underlay plan: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-lt-forum/fire-and-safety-templates/td-p/4395817
- Fire safety symbols (registration required.) http://www.cadforum.cz/catalog_en/block.asp?blk=12031
Please bear in mind that I don’t work in fire safety so take the advice with a pinch of salt. It would be great if there’s someone with who has experience in this industry could add their answer here.

I’m assuming that you wish to create a fabrication panel.
Note: that a fabrication panel is different to an assembly panel. This video describes the differences well in the presenters introduction.
Many people find that they prefer to learn visually – this video shows how to create ‘Multi Design Panelization’ in CAM350. I should warn that the audio is poor quality but it demonstrates the process all the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWqQYTX3rs8

This doesn’t ship in AutoCAD but AutoDesk has a separate application called TruNest which achieves this.
Here’s an overview of TruNest http://www.autodesk.com/products/trunest/overview

Asked on September 30, 2016 in Solidworks.
The two applications are not really comparable when analysing them feature vs. feature.
SolidWorks is massively more feature rich, it has a large team of developers behind their software and the rate of innovation has been impressive.
But this means there is a much steeper learning curve. One of SolidBuilder’s marketing points is that it is created ‘by builders for builders’ as such you can expect a more shallow learning curve.
I also recommend considering the fact that SolidWorks has a huge community of users. With a wealth of community-generated learning resources, tutorials and free downloads. Some examples are:
- Non official – SolidWorks Tutorials Youtube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtwaWPOXEBysZLh1rrPzwFw
- Non official – SolidWorks Community Files at GrabCAD https://grabcad.com/library
- Non official – SolidWorks blog: http://www.javelin-tech.com/blog/
Finally, pricing will vastly differ between the two solutions. I assume that you’re considering SolidBuilder due to cost more than anything else.
Choosing which solution is right for you will be dependent on what’s most important to you.
You should try both before purchasing. Here’s the relevent links to both:
- SolidWorks free trial http://www.solidworks.co.uk/sw/purchase/solidworks-trial.htm
- Contact SolidBuilder and request a free trial http://digitalcanal.com/contact/

Hi Frans,
Great question!
If you simply wish to share your CAD drawings online (without online editing) I would recommend GrabCAD’s Workbench. https://grabcad.com/workbench
It’s free to get started on Workbench and there are some handy Workbench features such as commenting and team access.
Does that help?
