What’s the best CAD monitor?

I’m in the market for a new monitor (display) for my CAD PC.   Does anyone have a recommendation for a good balance between cost vs. performance.   The larger, the better 🙂

Edit: Thanks for the comments. I should clarify further…   I’m not after a 4K monitor due to the reported issues with AutoCAD and 4K displays. I’m really tempted by the Dell Ultrasharp series http://www.dell.com/ed/business/p/ultrasharp-monitors

Are you looking for a 4K, wide screen? What kind of budget do you have Cadcamadam?

Actually for now 4K monitors have been reported to have issues with AutoCAD 2017 & AutoCAD 2017 Lt, but I am sure it will be solved in the next hotfix

@cadman I’m not after a 4k monitor. But yes, I guess it should be widescreen. Budget is up to $1,000 (USD) @JavaParaTrooper – yes, that’s what I heard also. I’m steering well clear of 4K for now. So far – the DELL Ultrasharp monitor seems to be a really good option. http://www.dell.com/ed/business/p/ultrasharp-monitors I had Dell before and it was very good tbh.

When selecting hardware for your CAD system, most would look at having lots of RAM, High End multiple GPU’s and nice fast SSD’s.  While having a high-end system is one of the most important aspects of an excellent user experience with Autodesk Software, more often than none CAD monitors tend to be overlooked at in this area.

If you think about it for a minute – the monitor is the piece of hardware that actually enables you to directly interact with your workstation.  Although there are many monitors on the market one can possibly use, it normally boils down to what size your looking for, whether multiple monitors is an option, the resolution of each monitor and what you can get in the budget you have set for yourself. Please see below for three monitors that you could look at from budget affordable range to High End Expensive Range:

  • Budget Monitor: ASUS VS228H-P

This is a fantastic budget monitor that is perfect for CAD and gets the job done. It is a LED based monitor with 1080p and HDMI input and has large screen real estate at 21.5 inches. It is slim and can be wall mounted if needed. Follow the link below:

  • Mid-Range Monitor: ASUS MX279H

This is an awesome monitor with high end features but doesn’t break your bank balance. It is a 27 inch display with IPS technology. As an added benefit, this CAD monitor comes equipped with two 3-watt speakers for sound and dual HDMI ports. I personally use multiple monitors of this range on a daily basis for all my work, including CAD. It has an excellent IPS display, In simple terms, IPS offers users wider viewing angles (in this case, 178 degrees) and better colours by allowing more light to pass through the monitor Follow the link below:

  • High-end Monitor: Samsung or Phillips Ultra HD

This is one few top-end monitors with a 4K resolution display. The monitor has over 1 billion colors for the best picture quality. If you want the best hardware possible for Autodesk Software, then this monitor you got to have in your armoury. Follow the link below:

BOTTOMLINE:

If you are still confused and unsure of where to start, take a trip down to your local electronics or computer shop and test-drive a few monitors, to get a feel for the different available sizes, and pick a setup that will work for you.  Ensure you keep in mind that it’s important to consider just how important this piece of hardware is to your experience when using your 3D CAD applications. Therefore, make sure to choose the best CAD monitor that fits your budget and needs. Good luck!

In my personal experience, a two side-by-side monitor setup trumps one amazing monitor any day. The setup is useful for working on your CAD program on your main screen, and having any reference materials opened on the secondary screen. This prevents you from having to cycle back between two different windows and honestly just streamlines your drafting process.
