An alternative might be the Offset command. Just click on the line or polyline that you want to make a double off, type OFFSET, set the offset distance, and presto – you have your double line.

In the Utilities menu, you can access the Drawing Setup option. From there, click on the Units tab. The dialog box that opens has all the tools you need to change your units. You can change them from inches to mm and also the decimal placements and precision.

If you’re talking about changing the units for a dimension style, just click on the dimension you want to change and type in the DIMSTYLE command. You should be able to change the units from there.

Check out the properties tab on the left side of the AutoCAD interface while you have your text selected. There should be a Text Height option that you can change to vary the size of the text.

After clicking the Application button (the AutoCAD logo button), click on Options.  Under the Display tab, you’ll find Colors. Click on that and a dialog box opens up where you can adjust all the color settings of AutoCAD including the background color. If you ever want to go to the default color settings, just click on Restore.

The fillet tool is going to be your best friend for lines like these! Just set the radius to 0 and you can join any two lines together at the point where they’re supposed to intersect.

Not replace as much as integrate and evolve. I think drafting architectural details in 2D is certainly necessary for project documentation and detailed drawing plans production, so it’s only a matter of integrating the drafting workflow with the 3D modeling workflow. You can see this already happening with most BIM software available out there.

Less about the technical stuff of AutoCAD and more about keeping an efficient workflow:

Make a template file with all the linetypes, colors, repeating blocks, etc. to speed up any future drafting project. It takes a while to setup and certainly asks for a lot of patience, but it’s all worth it when all you need to do after is just MATCHPROP and copy-paste.

I switch it up between V-Ray and Lumion. V-ray when I have the time to tweak all the tiny details in the render and Lumion when I’m on a tight schedule.

  • My top 3 would have to be:

QSELECT – when there are just too many elements on screen and you need to single out specific ones

PURGE – just to clean up the file

OVERKILL – also to clean up, this time with lines and drawing elements
