File versions and backups

Anyone working in the architecture or design industry understands the importance of saving older versions of construction drawings in case any newer revisions are scrapped and you need to revert back to older versions of the plans.

I was just curious if anyone here has any file backup conventions or routines that are easy to manage and clean up when needed.

And on a related note, does anyone have any file management standards that they feel work best? I’m curious to see what other people are doing with their digital storage.

Just to start the discussion, my routine involves saving files and labeling them with the current date.

The next time I need to edit the file, I make sure to copy the latest version of the file and update the date.
