Best OCR software for CAD drawings

Hi, I would like to make searches on the text of old drawings made in Board Station (Mentor Graphics). I am looking for a tool that would do a good job on assembly drawings generated with stroked text. I don’t need the shapes to be editable, only the text. The help of the community would be greatly appreciated in my search.

Scan2CAD is what you’re looking for.

I’m biased because I work at Scan2CAD. But using OCR on drawings is a very specialist requirement. Consider the difference between this and converting a text-only document.

Scan2CAD learns what should be converted using OCR (text) and what should be vectorized (the drawing) all within the same image. This is a very specialist feature and Scan2CAD is the best at it.

Again, I’m biased but you can test and see for yourself with the Scan2CAD free trial.

cdinel, I can vouch for Scan2CAD. It does OCR conversions for vector polylines as well so that’s a nice bonus!

I have tried it and with the drawing I have to convert, the result is not as interesting unfortunately.

I’d still have to do a lot of manual editing and this is what I want to avoid for design integrity.

A lot of the time, this comes down to the quality of the original raster image. If the resolution is too low or if the elements are too pixelated, automatic conversion programs will have a tough time extracting text information.

I’d recommend either cleaning up the image before conversion or getting a better scan copy if at all possible.
